Why Should I Use WebBooks?
Yes, they are great for remote learning . . . and so much more!
What's a WebBook?
Just to make sure we are on the same (digital) page, maybe I should provide a definition of a "WebBook."
When I decided to move away from a hard copy, printed "textbook," I considered several options.
I am an Apple user. So naturally, I considered using the iBook platform to create resources. Well, not everyone uses Apple products, and even though iPads were exploding, I thought there would be too many people unable to use the final product.
I considered eBooks, primarily PDF formats. But that would leave out a lot of media options.
What I needed was a platform that was device agnostic and available to nearly everyone. The end result: a web-based resource that works on any device (some are even optimized for a smartphone), with any browser. All you need is the internet.
Why a WebBook?
There are several advantages of a WebBook over the traditional textbook. Among them are the following:
Easy to update: Unlike other textbooks, the WebBook is easy to update and keep current. When the need arises, I simply log in to the website and add/delete/modify the information. When I click "publish." every student and teacher immediately have an updated version of the WebBook.
Rich Media: The WebBook allows for embedded features like video, audio,
or other elements that
encourage students to
interact and engage with
the content. This goes way
beyond a "page" in a
traditional book.
Links: In addition to rich
media, the WebBook
includes links to current
articles, web pages, blog
posts, etc. Again, this
feature provides great
opportunities to share
up-to-date material
without the need to
purchase an entirely new textbook.
Convenience: You can't lose a WebBook. A dog has never eaten a WebBook. You can't leave it at home. You are never one short for your class. You get the point. Log in and it's there. And to make it really easy . . . all students have the same login credentials!
Cost: I don't have to tell you about the cost of traditional hard-copy textbooks. Purchasing a site license will allow you to provide students with our WebBooks for a fraction of the cost of "old school" textbooks. Use the money you save to cover other costs for your program.
Why Not Today
Since you have the option of purchasing a lifetime site license for each of our WebBooks, why not purchase today. No need to worry about them wearing out, getting old or not using them each term. They will be there, ready to go, whenever you need them.
