6. Have Some Fun!

The Tip-Off is basically an excuse for fans (and players and coaches) to have a good time. As a result, Fan Fun events are the key to a successful event. Fan Fun events create a festive atmosphere and create enthusiasm and excitement among those in attendance.

Good Fan Fun events have a few common characteristics.

First, they must be . . . you guessed it . . . fun! The key here is that they must be fun for the fans in the stands. Participants will enjoy almost any activity because they are actually involved. The rest of the crowd is on the outside looking in.

Second, the event should be relatively easy to set up and administer. Fan Fun events are typically used at actual games and occur during quarter breaks, half-time, or time-outs. Although there will not be any significant time restraints at your Tip-Off, it is to your advantage to have fast-paced events.

Next, you will want to make sure that the event does not cause any unnecessary mess or damage to the court or the fan. This is usually a concern with "eating" contests. These events, while popular, must be run carefully. They can result in a mess that must be cleaned up before the event can continue, or in a fan receiving the Heimlich maneuver from your coach!

Finally, Fan Fun events should involve either a demonstration of skill (as in shooting events) or an element of embarrassment. As bad as it may sound, the embarrassment factor is very effective. Fans in the stands thoroughly enjoy seeing their friends and classmates (or teachers and principals) making a fool of themselves!

The following pages include several ideas for Fan Fun events. They are intended to be used as-is or to get you thinking about new and different events.
